Limit Texas Hold em poker is a poker game where the betting limits are fixed.

When poker is played with a fixed-limit wagering structure, players chose only whether to bet or not – the size of this bet is fixed. To allow bluffing, the amount that is bet usually doubles after so many rounds. The double wager is also known as the big bet.

To give an example, a four-round limit hold em game called “2 and 4 limit” ($2/$4) specifies that each bet in the early rounds is $2, and that bets in the 3rd and 4th round are $4. This is with respect to the amount that can bet raised in a round. A player may bet $2, get raised $2 and the get re-raised for another $2 making the total bet $6.

Most limit hold em games have a fixed number of raised in a round. The maximum depends on the rules of the table. This is usually the starting bet plus 3 or 4 raises.

For example in a $2/$4 game, with a bet and 3 raises. Take an early round where the bets are $2 and 3 players, Alice, Bob and Colin playing:

* Alice bets $2.
* Bob raises another $2, thus making it $4 to play.
* Colin puts in another bet, raising another $2 on top of that, making it $6 to play.
* Alice puts in the fourth bet (she is usually said to cap the betting).

Once Alice has made her last wager, Bob and Colin may only call. They cannot raise again as the betting has been capped.
